Processed Painting: Deconstruct Perfectionism, People-Pleasing & The Need To Control

Are you a perfectionist or a people-pleaser? If you are then you know the deep seeded feeling of guilt, shame, frustration and so much more. These oh to common traits can hinder our ability to take risks and be authentic in our creative pursuits. However, there's a way to break free from these limiting mindsets and cultivate more passion and play in our lives. It's called processed painting, a method of painting that emphasizes the process of creating art over the end result.

Letting Go of Perfectionism

As individuals, we often hold ourselves to high standards, striving for excellence in every endeavor. However, this idea that something can or will be “perfect” is something that was made up by white supremacists and patriarchal systems that just simply don’t align with the progressive soul center people of today. This idea that things HAVE to be a certain way in order to be “RIGHT”, creates major roadblocks in our creative journey. The art of this practice provides a unique solution to this problem by allowing us to let go of the need to impress others or achieve a certain standard. Instead, we can experiment and play with colors, textures, and shapes, enjoying the creative process without worrying about the end result. This is the beauty of processed painting. It helps folks break free from the fear of failure and criticism.

Embracing the Process

In processed painting, there are no rules or guidelines to follow. This isn’t a “do by” process. Now, you may be wondering what this means, well I’ll explain. When you are in a processed painting class, you are taught to explore everything that you can do, use and explore; however, you are not given an example. The purpose of this is to play and use your imagination, so you will be asked to use any materials you like and paint in any way that feels good to you. This helps you tap into your own unique style and express yourself authentically without worrying about what others might think. This also provides a way for you to push the boundaries of your creativity and explore new avenues in your art. By embracing the process of creation, you can unlock new levels of inspiration and joy.

Reconnecting with Playfulness

As you’ve heard me say by now, processed painting assists in reconnecting to your inner child. It provokes curiosity and a sense of play that has been lost in so many adults due to our hamster wheel society and hustle culture agenda. When you’re focused on achieving a certain goal or pleasing others, you can lose sight of the joy and spontaneity that comes from exploring and experimenting. Processed painting encourages you to embrace the process of creation and let go of any preconceived notions or expectations.

My Personal Process

Processed painting is a powerful and liberating practice that can help dissolve perfectionism and people-pleasing while encouraging passion and play. By embracing the process of creation and letting go of any expectations or judgments, we can reconnect with our creativity and express ourselves authentically. So why not give it a try? My workshops are based on building self-worth and encouraging play in your everyday life. The workshops I offer are in-person and intimate. It’s important for me to hold space for each and every one of my artists, so for this reason, I like to keep the community under 15 people per class. I also provide all the tools and paints you will need. Oh and the best thing? You don’t have to be an artist to attend! I created this workshop to impact everyday people who are looking for new creative ways to explore healing.

This workshop is unlike anything on the market right now. It is revolutionary in its work and have I mentioned that it includes hypnosis? Yeah, that might be one of my favorite parts about this offering. I have cultivated hypnotic subliminal recordings to play in the background of each workshop to support the internal shifts you are craving.

As a hypnotherapist, I am formally trained in Timeline Therapy, NLP, Regression, Parts Integration, and Coaching. But as an artist, I’m completely self-taught and have been creating things with my hands for over 10 years. I’m located in Portland, Oregon, where I offer in-person sessions, but if you’re not in the local area, don’t fret. I also practice virtually and see clients all over the world!
